Adolescents and Parents/Guardians

How can adolescents benefit from therapy?

During adolescence, young people's bodies and brains go through enormous changes.

Often parents/guardians and adolescents report that their relationships with each

other go through a period of change.

Sometimes adolescents may feel overwhelmed by these changes and their emotions.

Talking to a qualified adult who is not involved in an adolescent's daily life can benefit their mental health.

I can help them to understand their emotions and think about ways they can help themselves and/or ask for help when they are having difficulties.

Parents/Guardians

Sometimes it can be more beneficial for a parent/guardian to attend some therapy sessions, without their child.

Together, we can think about the parenting challenges you are facing and consider different ways that will help you improve your relationship with your child and/or support their development/mental health.

Some of the reasons adolescents have attended therapy with me are:

  • Low mood/Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Feeling miserable/shame or embarrassment
  • Bereavement
  • Parents divorce/relationship breakdown
  • Illness of self /friend /relative
  • Relationship, peer group and family issues (past and/or present)
  • Feeling lonely or isolated
  • Cultural issues (e.g. fitting in, accepting/acknowledging differences)
  • Self confidence/low self esteem
  • Witnessed or experienced physical or emotional abuse
  • Exam stress
  • Academic pressure

Some of the reasons parents have attended therapy with me are:

  • Difficulties around managing conflict and/or boundaries
  • Wanting to think about different parenting strategies
  • To be a different kind of parent from their own parents
  • To improve the relationship with their child
